Headlamp Issues

Hi All.

I have a strange issue with the headlights on my MK5.

If I turn the stalk to sidelights (first position) the dip beam comes on.

If I then turn it to dip beam (Second position) the dip beam goes off and the sidelights come on.

Also the main beam (stick forward) will only work when the lights are on sidelights.

I don't know if this is a new fault as I have never driven the car in the dark.

Any help appreciated

Derek

I am by no means an electrical specialist but, it sounds like you have two wires that have changed position or someone has reconnected your wiring swopping the position of two wires. Maybe one side light wire has changed position to either the dipped beam position or the main beam feed/position, this would be on the switch, unless wires have been messed about with on one of the headlamps. This seems more likely as the headlamps are easier to get at, rather than the switch. Easier to fiddle with! Unless you've had the switch out and got the wiring mixed up? Hope thats a bit helpful, not easy to diagnose without actually seeing the switch and wiring to the lights.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at the wiring at the headlamp end and all seems fine.

The switch end on the other hand has been messed about with by the PO.

Not sure what has been done and I cant find any sort of wiring diagram as to what wire is supposed to go where.

I have ordered a replacement stalk assembly just in case it's that.

I'm going to have another look at it this morning to see if I can sort it.

I will keep you posted.

I doubt you will need a new stalk, however, if you can locate the feed wire to the side lights (on the stalk) and the feed wire to the dipped beam lights I think it's a case of swopping their positions so that click 1 goes to side lights and click 2 to dipped/main beam. Sorry I can't give you wire colours, with lights on if you can pull off one connection, from the stalk, at a time, you can find which wire feeds which light and go from there. Hope thats your problem sorted! Look for possible 're-connections' along the wire, did some one cross the wires somewhere?

OK.

The replacement stalk didn't fix the problem.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the headlight stalk or tell me what wires are supposed to go where.

Many Thanks

Derek

OK.....

I Might Have Just Found The Problem.

It Appears That The Escosrt Has Got Whats Called Dim Dip.

That Would Mean That The Headlights Are On 20% Power When Turned To Sidelights.

When I Switch To Dipped Beam They Just Go To Normal Sidelights.

I Think I Have A Relay Missing......

Will Investigate Further....

All sorted now.....

Not by the convensitionl way either.

There was no relay missing.

But with a lot of probing with the multimeter I found another way....

It all works as it should now....

Maybe not how Ford intended.....

I have lost the Dim/Dip... But who needs it anyway?

But it works....

If anyone else has the same problem. Give me a shout.....
