Unable To Start Immobiliser? ??

Hello, I finally managed to find a nice, prime for restoration mk5 xr3i that was sold with a possible immobiliser problem. It has baffled my son who is a mechanic so I am searching for any help or whether I should give up. It is a 1992 16v 1.8 and when the key is turned nothing happens, no lights on the dash no turning of the starter no anything. All I have noticed is a single click that appears to be coming from near the ignition barrel. I have contacted my local auto electrical business and they have given me no hope. I have read that sometimes it turns out to be the fuse box but the only replacement I have found is in America at £300 delivered. If anyone can help it would be great because I have been searching for one of these for awhile now and really do not want to send it to the bone yard.

Many thanks, Alan

Hello, thanks for that. I will be trying to source a more reasonably priced box and keep my fingers crossed that it is that.

Hello, I have managed to source a refurbished fuse box that matches the numbers for my car.The auto electrician round here need me to take it to their base.

I thank you all for your input.

New fusebox sourced and fitted , great. Now the car turns over but refuses to start just keeps turning over. It doesn't even try to start. I do not know if it is relevant but the little red light is constantly on. Please help as I want this to work as it has taken quite a while to find a viable project in my price range.

All the best, Alan

Have you tested to see if you have any spark on your sparkplugs. Remove one keep the lead attached ,get someone to turn the ignition over while you watch the spark plug to see if its sparking. If no spark then its electrical. If you have a spark then it has to be fuel, prob the fuel pump.

Hi, there is no spark but also there doesn't appear to be any fuel, or I cannot smell any petrol from around the engine that would usually be present after turning the engine over and over as has been done.

if the red immobiliser light is on when trying to start then the immobiliser is set and the ECU won't allow fuel or spark. If it's pre "PATS", try locking/unlocking the doors with the key and then try to start (if it doesn't work when you do it via drivers door, try lock/unlock the passenger side in case the switch in the lock is faulty).
