Guest 90_Spec
Morning all, After a few years of non ford ownership and driving a "nice" motor, I got the itch again. I've previously owned a very late Mk4 XR3i and a B Plates series 1 turbo, both of which required many hours of welding. 6 years have passed and I found this one on gumtree for a reasonable price, local and seems all there. It's my first Cabby and I intend to get her back to a nice condition. I'm pretty sure the inner sills are fine, but the outers could do with some attention. As its my first cabby has anyone any advice on replacing outer sills? Better to patch than to replace? I know they have the support beam running through them but does this make it easier to replace the outer dill as structural rigidity is retained? Any advice would be gratefully received. Update with pictures soon :-) Rich
Guest jimmyush
looking forward to seeing it! i have no experience with the sills but im sure somebody will be along with some help... will it be on the road for this summer?
Admin Ollie Posted May 14, 2016 Admin Share Posted May 14, 2016 welcome to the cabby club rich :>) depends on the area of rot to be honest as to patch or replace if you look underneath you will see the extra support / strength look forward to lots of pics regards Ollie :>)
Guest 90_Spec
Hi All, well i do have pics from yesterday, but the site wont accept my URl from photo bucket.. how do you guys get pics up? It looks like its mostly outer sill at the front and rear, middle is fine, and a small potion of the support beam is rotton, but im thinking i can plate that. id really like to do a nice job, im just weary of removing too much strength for welding

Guest 90_Spec
thanks RS Cab, So im guessing the only commercially available panels will be floor pan, inner and out sills, with the other bits being no existent, well i think there should be enough strength in the chassis to allow me to remove the entire outer sill looking at that, then whack a new one on ! other thing, the bottom of the front and rear arches have gone too, both still solid from about 5 inches up, but ive never done a wheel arch, again, is it better to use the entire repair panel, or try and just use what you need? the other 2 escorts ive done was mostly floor pans and a bit of inch angle along each sill to repair the seam Series 1 i did below
RScab
TBH Rich the only panels available, floor & sills will be the same as the Tintop I prefer to replace the complete panels - a lot more work but normally looks better as for the support sections you'll need to fabricate your own panels or patch as required It also depends on availability of the panels and costs tho
Guest 90_Spec
well looking on the net, most panel suppliers do the sill sand wheel arches, in fact there is still quite a lot available for the old escorts.. luckily. http://www.carz2.co.uk/escort-mk34-1980-to-90-4590-c.asp Ill look into doing the entire wheel arch repair panel then, front entire wing and outer sill, should be a tidy job tho, Just hope the weather holds out for a few weeks Im also thinking of going the turbo route, am i right in thinking its only the bottom end and turbo that are needed as its already EFI, with of course the ECU and MAP sensor? Perhaps a Motec ECU thanks RS Cab
