Xr3I Wont Run Now, After Installing Fuel Pump Relay

Right 1st things 1st the car run fine last week.

The fuel pump relay was missing when i bought the car, it had an ignition switched live going to the fuel pump relay terminal block, which made the fuel pump run as soon as the ignition was turned on and kept running, engine was also running a little rich....

Is the fuel pump supposed to run all the time ignition/engine on.....? sorry been 15 odd years since owning one of these..

Any way I disposed of all the silly homemade wires and alarm wires etc and purchasd a Lucas aftermarket NEW fuel pump relay for the ford escort mk4 xr3i plugged it in and switched ignition on heard fuel pump prime for 3 seconds then cut off so started car fired up and stalled.....

tried again for 4-5 times the same - fuel pump primes for only 3 seconds then stops car starts then stalls - no fuel I take it.....?

connected multiplug to relay fuel pump wires red/black and switched ignition on 12volts to red/black wire for 3 seconds then drops to 0 volts

So I am assuming the pump needs to run all the time so why isn't this pump running all the time...???

Also mine is a MFi 1.6 XR3i cabby - purple relay for fuel and speed sensing relay black next to it which some of the wires are interlinked factory fitted

hi

my c reg mfi mk3 primes then switches off :>)

has the fuel pump been changed to an after market one ? the reason I ask is one of our members runs all the time for some reason pretty loud aswell

if you can get another fuel relay just to make sure the one you have is working correctly

I see your in kent ,where abouts ?

regards ollie

The pump run all the time when I bought it as it had an ignition live plugged in the relay holder instead of a relay and it was noisy

So I ordered a brand new relay from Lucas (aftermarket) now it primes for 3 seconds then starts runs for 3 seconds

Also before I took out previous owners wiring one of the wires to the speed sensing module ( bosch 0 280 230 116) was disconnected

it was pin 88a red/black which goes to Over run shut off valve, which I reconnected before installing new Fuel Relay, I unplugged to see if it was that but still the same

I hate it when you have to chase back on others bad wiring mods.... AAAHHHHH

From the Haynes manual wiring mine comes under K - jetronic fuel injection NOT the KE - jetronic . because of the colour coded wires and I have the Speed Sensing Module instead of the Injection Module Relay

Would the speed sensor module or the new relay be causing to stall then?

As it runs fine with 12volts ignition to fuel pump to keep pump running constantly....

So the relay when ignition turned gives power to the pump for 2-3 seconds then stops pump priming, until engine RUNNING, so where from does the relay get feed from to the pump to know when engine running,

coil? ignition module? speed sensor module?

The safety module is located under the facia panel on the driver’s side and is coloured purple (FUEL PUMP RELAY).
Its purpose is to shut off the power supply to the fuel pump should the engine stall or the vehicle be involved in an accident. The module senses ignition pulses, and cuts the fuel supply if the ignition pulses stop.

The fuel shut-off valve system is an economy device whereby air is drawn from within the air cleaner unit through the shut-off valve and directed into the ducting chamber above the air sensor plate causing adepression. This then causes the sensor plate to drop which, in turn, shuts off the fuel supply. The valve is operated by signals from a coolant temperature sensor and a throttle position sensor.

The shut-off valve will only operate under the following circumstances:

a) When the engine coolant temperature is
at or above 35°C (95°F)

When the throttle is closed and with the
engine speed decelerating from speeds
above 1600 rpm

The engine speed is sensed by a Speed Sensing Module which is coloured black and located beneath the facia panel on the driver’s
side

Now its not starting with the switched ignition live, I can hear the pump run as soon as ignition is switched on, it trys to start might get a cough or 2 then cuts out.....

Is this a fuel supply issue....?

Is there a fuel cut off on these cars....? again its a XR3i cabriolet MFi 1988

Hi, I have EXACTLY the same issue! (@ fordstevie77), have you solved the problem? My car is an XR3i made in June 1983. It ran increasingly badly over several months until eventually it began to be increasingly difficult to start from cold. However, once warm, it ran ok. As the car is not on the road it is only started once every 2 weeks. In the end it would fire then die immediately. I changed the fuel for fresh but to no avail. I stripped the Bosch k-Jetronic fuel distributer, ultrasonically cleaned its internals and fitted a service kit to no avail. Then I realised that the fuel pump was not priming! I replaced the fuel pump relay and the pump now primes! Great I thought! But although engine rotates vigorously when turning it over it will not start and doesn't even attempt to fire. However, I can smell a hint of petrol vapour after repeated attempts (which was not the case before replacing the relay) Please note, the new relay is NOT original Ford but is guaranteed equivalent compatible. (Lovely Ford Spares wanted £60.47!!!) I hope you or anyone else can assist?

Thanks

I had the same problems with my 1987 XR3i mfi, turn the ignition on the pump primes for 3 seconds and the car started but if I switched of and then couple minutes later it would turn over but not start and no priming from the fuel pump, left it for say 10 mins then it started, when it does not start a can run a wire from battery direct to fuel pump and it would start, luckily I bought 87 xr3i for spare last year so took the purple fuel pump relay of it and fitted it to mine and problem all solved starts up every time now, so the problem I think boils down to fuel pump relay on problems above, if you ran a wire direct to fuel pump and it starts it shows the fuel pump is ok, I have read somewhere only fit genuine Ford fuel pump relay, I will posting on this genuine relay as not available in NZ. Cheers
