Engine Rebuilding Advice

I am basically doing my first engine rebuild on my 1.6 mfi. I currently have everything stripped down, head, main block etc.

I have a fair few questions to ask to make sure I get things right, some off these may sound basic to some off you.

  • The internals are full off lime scale deposits from the coolant, what is the best way to get the block and head fully cleaned inside and out?
  • As the engine is stripped all the way down what should I be looking at upgrading to get a bit more power?
  • Is there a way to tell if the head has already been skimmed?
  • If I end up getting the crank shaft re ground is it easy to pick up over sized bearings?
  • Is getting the cylinders bored worth it and also will I need wider piston rings to compensate?

Any help of advice would me greatly appreciated.

I would get some quotes for the work first. Having an engine rebored ,crank ground and new bits is expensive. Might be worth getting quote for an exchange engine. Other option is if you want more power picking up a low milage mondeo or focus 1.8 or 2.0 litre zetec engine. Or fitting an 1.6 mfi rs turbo set up.

I dont mind spending the money on the engine rather than buying another engine as this way i know it SHOULD be reliable.

Is this normal wear on the piston or is it down to something else?

to have the block faced, honed and rebored, crank ground, along with con rods, new oversized pistons, flywheel and clutch cover, all lightened and balanced plus all parts cleaned for rebuild cost me about £600.

Got new bearings, (use hd acl ones) seals, head bolts etc from Burton Power. Got the ARP con rod bolts off ebay am going ARP rather than standard as they are stronger, that ran me about £230 give or take.

Hope the info helps, good luck with the rebuild
