Dead Miss

I've decided to put my mk4 xr3i back on the road following a 4- year break, problem is on tick over it runs at around 8/900 rpm, on the road it has a dead miss and keeps revving, depress the clutch and it runs fine, the temperature display says it;s running about half way but it's super hot. however a minute or so before the electric fan kicks in the engine starts racing and goes up to around 1500 rpm and stays there, ......... switch it off for half hour and it's back to normal, i've changed the fuel filter, plugs and leads, thermostat and temperature sensor unit, i was informed it could be the throttle sensor that's not working correctly, had it in for the mot and it's running at zero emissions, checked and changed most of the hoses all so, ........ so in a nutshell basically it's either fuel starved or a air intake issue, if someone or anyone know's please reply as i'm running or run out of what to look for,

Hi Ian

Many thanks for your replication message to my question, we've tried all the pipes with the exception of the one running under the efi unit on top of the engine as you can't get your finger's in to take it off for testing, tightened the inlet/outlet manifolds, changed the fuel filter and thermostat, plugs and leads, plus the air temperature sensor, it run's on initial start-up at around 8/900 rpm but soon heats to such an extent you can't touch the hoses, according to the temperature gauge it registers around the half way mark but then electric fan kicks in, had it in for the mot about a fortnight ago and it running cleaner than if it had a cat fitted.

We're thinking it's either fuel starvation or a air intake issue, however I've been round a few garages today all who say they've no idea what to look for or don't have a diagnostic machine programme that old, so I'm wondering if it has a plug fitted for a check as it's a German and not a Spanish model, the only thing is that the faster you cruise it evens out as in the fuel to air mixture evens out, other than that no one seems to be able to allocate the problem.
