Guest georgemcook
Any suggestions how I strengthen the chassis? Make the car a bit more rigid? Has anyone tried a strut from the top of the windscreen to the centre of the roof pillar? Are these available to buy? Or has anyone done this DIY? Ideas welcome Mk6 1996 1.

gingergman
Why do you want to do that?
Guest georgemcook
When I go over rough Kent roads at speed, the chassis twists and wobbles around. I can see the front windscreen uprights move left and right while the rest of the body behind catches up a fraction of a second later. I bought my wife a Mazda MX-5 and fitted an underbody strengthening kit; it is much stronger now, better handling and firmer on the road. Great result. By comparison, the escort wobbles like a jelly. It does not have the structural strength of a true sportscar. I would like to improve it, even if I have to invent and make the parts myself. Has anyone else done this? badger
hi George if you're finding the mk6 like that then don't go in a mk4 there 10 times worse lol
Vincygav
You could fit the front strutbrace if it is still there, a few people removed them and sell them; so check you still have it. There is also meant to be a lower strutbrace, but again some people remove these and sell them to owners of standard Escorts. Try seeing your roof catch handles are not too tight, if it is it would cause the windscreen to flex as you say.
Guest Terence Mears
Yea when I put a rover v8 vitesse engine in my TR7 the prop was shortened and balanced and nearly tore the back axle off so had to form the back end in 10 mm box section
