Sounds like you have a few electrical problems. I'd start by checking the fusebox and they corrode causing lots of problems. Some engine sensor can cause the engine to cut out and can be intermitant problems. Diagnostic equipement will help identify what the problem is.

hi m8 when it happens does your central door locking work correctly or intermitantly as as freind had simular problem on his 96 tintop si turned out to be the sensor switch that goes round the door lock that controls the alarm and imobilizer the sensor had come off the passenger side door lock and as he went over any pot holes his car would cut out due to the switch being knocked in the door activating the immobilizer failing that if you drop your fusebox down theres a fuse in the middle that also cotrols the alarm/imobilizer check if the contacts have any corrosion on them as lee81 recommends

been as your lights not coming on by the clock i would recomend checking the fuse box as lee81 said above if you remove the dash panel on the drivers side you can lift the clip that holds the fusebox up unclip it from the top and lower it down on the top round the middle of the fusebox theres a fuse if you remove that one see if theres any corrosion around the contacts if there is then theres your problem m8,

also when it wont start does the ignition lights still come on or not at all as if its totaly dead?
