Guest Delboybully
I have a k reg red escort converti. The immobiliser is rubbish, so i am having an alarm fitted (gemini). The alarm fitter is going to connect the alarm to the central locking so that it will unlock/lock the doors remotely The problem i have is keys. I have 2 keys, one ignition key and another key to open the doors and boot. I only have one of each. I have phoned my local ford dealership and they can do a copy of the keys for £25 each. I think this is expensive, is there anywhere else i can get these keys copied for a more reasonable price (say a chain of key cutters). I live just outside north west london
Guest Rustler
Hi DELBOY.... Escort "TIBBE" keys can be obtained from "CUSTOM ENGRAVERS" for about 5quid ..+..£4.00 p/p............ Go to E-bay....310185462705 , or ring 020 8668 9289.. You will prob' need your "TIBBE KEY" # , but if you have'nt got this either get a FORD Garage to read it or read it yourself, either way ,you MUST MAKE SURE if the "READ" is from the plastic finger hold....to the key end' or from the key end..... back to the finger hold, ...... otherwise the key won't work. CUSTOM ENGRAVERS should be able to give U any info' if in duobt....... Rustler ..The Oldest Cabbier....
gingergman
i know my local key cutting place can do them, so dont see why you would have a problem at your local cobblers
Guest Delboybully
Thanks gingerman, i have a timpsons near me so i will try them Rustler, i am confused. What is a 'TIBBE' key, is that the 'funny' type ford uses. How do i read a key?
Guest Rustler
Hi Delboy... Yea... a "TIBBE" key is the type ford used on most of their cars around the 90s...it's your MK5 Escort key..I think Jaguar used them also. It differs from the normal TOOTH type key by having flats ground into it, when you look at the key side on you'll see on the buisness end that the flats are at 3 different depths,+ possibly, an unground segment...in all there are 6 segments which represent 6 numbers(#).. ie:- UNGROUND ...... = 1 SLIGHTLY GROUND = 2 DEEPER GROUND.. = 3 DEEPEST GROUND. = 4 If yo go to www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm and look at Rebuild Door Lock- Ford Scorpio 1995, that will give you a very clear indication and pictures on exactly how to read the keys.......SIMPLE!!! and you get 2 different patt' keys for £8.98 + £4.00 p/p. Lets all know how you get on...either with "TIMPSONS" or "Custom Engravers"......best of luck... Rustler ...The Oldest Cabbier...
Guest Delboybully
ok i went to Timpsons today. He had a little trouble reading the keys due to them being "very worn". I have 2 keys, one for the ignition and one for the doors. The cost is £10 per key or 2 for £15 (but these 2 have to be the same key). So i paid £20 for 2 keys. The door key works spot on. However i had trouble with the ignition key. It only works one way round and even then it needed a little bit of persuading. So i took the ignition key back and the bloke reckoned it needed soem filing. Unfortunately it didnt help. So i am going to have to take it back again for him to try to sort. The chap said if it dont work, just bring it back to get it sorted. So far the service has been good and the price is great when compared to Fords, i just need the key to work
Guest Rustler
Yea... one of my keys showed signs of excesive wear and 2 segments were very difficult to read, I ended up rebuilding the glove box barrel, from the info on the SCORPIO site....When I get time I'll fit a new WAFER or 2 in the barrel and modify it to operate from the master key. Will be interesting to learn if "THOMPSONS" can overcome your prob' without charging you extra ?
gingergman
thats the trouble with old keys, my ignition one is worn loads its nearly all smooth atleast there trying to sort it for you, you never know, ford could bugger it up also. good price too
chaz
I hope you get this sorted mate, I love mk3's they are so simple, just go to any old ironmogery store and they cut you a set, that's what I did to get a spare set for mine.
