Guest s11pyk
sorry if this is in the wrong forum but never mind eh! my mk4 is sometimes hard to get in gear, the worst being reverse. iv been looking on a few forums and think maybe the quadrant and pawl might need replacing? hope not the clutch. symptoms are.... if at standstill i dip the clutch it is hard to select reverse. when releasing the clutch it only travels about an inch at the most before its engaged. it sometimes sounds a bit noisy, not a whine, more a meshy sound. does not seem to go when clutch is down so might not be release bearing? if out of gear i rev the car the gearstick vibrates? if i have to get the clutch done how much is a new clutch? iv seen them on ebay for £30 up to over 100 but dunno what to go for. can anyone post links to suitable replacements please. has anyone replaced theirs? (stupid question) and did you do the quadrant too? i just want it to drive nice! im gonna throw some spends at making it right but not too much. i only wanna do what i have to as the tax is out at the end of the month, it needs mot and iwanna but nice things not just replace things
Guest s6boy1979
Hi Have you tried adjusting more the clutch ratchet as it sounds a bit like you are not geting enough when pushing the pedal, if that is adjusted then try a new cable as it may have stretched. Start with that 1st as it wont cost much. If that does not solve it then it could well be the syncro in the box which would either be a rebuild or box change. RobMk4TwinCarb
If your happy doing it yourself you may aswell get the whole lot and change it all. I used a heavy duty rst clutch in my standard 1.6i and has been ok (other than the thrust bearing that came with the kit being wank). Mine had alot of the symptoms you describe when I first got it I done the clutch, pressure plate and bearing and is much better now.
Guest Lee81
Its always a little difficult to select reverse in these cars. Reverse gear has no syncro like the other gears. However if your fully depressing the clutch and you getting gears grinding continuously then you have clutch disengagment problems. In this situation you will find it hard to selcet first or any gear from a standstill with clutch depressed fully. Its most likly the release bearing which is at fault here. Though the quadrant can also lose teeth/bearings wear and cause a similar problems. Quadrant is about £8 though the job is very tricky due to access. Would do this first as well as checking the clutch cable to make sure it hasn't frayed and extended. Most motor stores should be able to supply you with a clutch kit for around the £70 mark. Guest Lee81
RST clutch is a good item to use as said. Still very light and easy to use but will allow you room for tuning up to about the 180bhp point
