hey im new on here got my 1990 mk4 xr3i 1600 cabby last saturday, i was told it needed a new alternator but that was all.

it turns over but hardly starts. its okay when its warm but when it gets cold again dosn't wanna know for a wile and a bit of pumping accelorator to start but most times the battery dies before starting (wasted with turning over). you can smell fuel and you can hear the pump when you turn ignition on, good spark with new plugs new leads. mechanic came round sunday and said it was just in need of a good service. with an oil treatment to breakdown deposits and injector cleaner is this true do you think?

also has oily engine as the 'O' ring was missing from oil cap and oil sprayed out and run down engine, could this have effected starter motor or any electricals down there.

gunna try new alternator anyways coz te battery dosn't seem to charge very well.

will apprichiate any help, dyingto drive it love em soo much.

cold start valve sounds knackerd mate! if it starts fine when warm and wont start when cold! take it out and clean it, all is does it inject extra petrol to help it fire but if its blocked then dont work properly, check all the wires are connected aswell and all the fuel lines are nice and tight on the metering head

1990 is EFI isnt it? unplug your temp sensor and try it mate, it could be broken and the ECU might think the engine is warm and not use the cold start

if the above comments dont work and its efi try turning the potentiometer clockwise i think to richen the fuel mixture see if that makes a difference.

as for the starter motor you should be able to hear it engage with the flywheel when u first start craking the engine over. and if it or the wiring was damaged or faulty i doubt it would work at all.

if its Mfi, which i doubt it is it could be the valve in the metering unit is abit sticky......

another thing is does the exhaust sound blowey at all? before my escort was converted to efi it would try to start but would give up when it was cold, we changed the metering unit but that didnt work and it was a crack in the welds on the manifold down pipe.

when i converted mine to efi it wouldnt start for 11 months, had similar symptoms to yours except it would never start regardless of its temperature and it was edis moduel and crank position sensor.

hey fit the alternator and filled up with a bit of fuel and injector cleaner treatment just because...

erm it worked fine for a wile now i got the problem again, is the cold start valve the one staring you in the face on top of the inlet manifold facing to the right? just with one fuel line or the one with two??? :S

how would anyone recoment cleaning it? just clean all the entry and exit points and teminals???

i tried the fuel adjustment bit but smelled way to rich so turned it down again, coz it smellled like the plugs were drowning.

also where would i unplug the temp sensor for this problem.

sorry havn't invested in a haynes guide yet  had lots of work to do though.

cheers again daz

think i may have solved the problem by replacing the warm up regulator, wich i found out by bumping into a old ford mechanic in my local spares shop whilst going to order the cold start valve  hady hey???

soo happy should be cruising the front on easter holiday
